nothing has to be ugly or beautiful, it all just Is. ugly and beautiful are socially constructed concepts defined in many different ways and are completely subjective, but our individual perceptions are also influenced by society. that does not mean that they have to be defined by our society though, we can redefine them. and we can use the words with society’s definition to critique them, or we can repurpose these words to give ourselves power.

i don’t think beautiful is an inherently harmful word. we call nature beautiful. we call emotions beautiful. we call songs and poems and art in all forms beautiful. we call language beautiful. we call connections between humans beautiful. we can find beauty in so many different ways. i don’t think that saying that everyone is beautiful in their own way is equivalent to saying everyone can be “fuckable by men’s standards”. i think that “embracing ugly” can be a very valuable way to combat personal feelings of physical self-image insecurity stemming from marginalization, but you have to understand what definitions of ugly and beautiful you are using when you do that. you are using men’s, white people’s, able bodied people’s, cishet people’s definitions, which is fine when you are actively turning them around and combatting them. but those definitions are not required or inherent to the words.
