What I think would’ve been a really good idea for a Death Note movie is calling it something else (don’t laugh, you’ll know what I mean) but advertise it as like a spin-off, have these people as the characters but call them something else because they aren’t Light and L and Misa and Watari, nopppe, have this whole thing go down and then have Ryuk see the distruction and the Mia character dead, the Light character’s family, father ruined, the L character turned inside out from the grief caused by his friend’s death, and then in the epilogue of the movie have him (Ryuk) go like “let’s go again” or something and plop the Death Note down in a completely different place where a Light Yagami-looking Japanese motherfucker picks it up, thus implying that that is how and when the Death Note anime happens. I know in the anime Ryuk drops it out of boredom but still it would be cool and it would show another set of people and how the book would change their lives, not the characters we know and love and they destroyed have their own story, and then it would tie to the anime. Of course the Kira shtick and the main detective “L”’s mannerisms would have to be omitted and some more things changed so it looks even less like the adaptation of the anime’s events but it could’ve been doable.

I think that could’ve saved this idea of making an American Death Note movie.
