What is a red herring in writing?

a red herring is something the writer puts in the story to sort of distract from something more important or relevant. a very simple example to imagine this would be in crime shows where all evidence leads to a certain suspect being guilty but then someone else you wouldn’t have suspected turns out to be the murderer that certain clues pointed at but you were too distracted to notice. the clues pointing towards the first (innocent) person being guilty would be red herrings.

or like remember iron man 3 (spoiler alert idk if youve seen it x)) and how everyone thought that bearded guy was gonna be the villain but then he turns out to be a paid actor and a babbling fool, and the real villain is the dude from the beginning of the movie? also a red herring

i guess it can be anything done in any way that distracts the reader/audience from realising the truth at first.

Now I feel like reading how the 2 are gaying so hard for each other.

I will put it online when I’m finished ^3^ It’s actually kind of a sad lesbian story but not entirely because they’re not together anymore but they’re still in love with each other but with Vale being an amoral assassin and Morlene spearheading a rebellion they just didn’t really work out. But Morlene moved on and found love againand it’s actually one of my favourite things because even though Vale is supposed to be the love of her life, the new girlfriend is never shoved in the background and it’s never implied that Morlene loves her less or like she’s settling or that Lourdes is the “second choice”. Also Vale’s relationship with Lourdes is adorable and Lourdes is a perfect person who deserves the world. It’s like a love triangle but not really and in the end they know that this is the only way all of them can be happy and since that’s all they want for each other it never becomes a problem.

I can relate to this post so fucking much! ♥♥ Same with jeans and bras too x) And idk but I feel the same excitement with food shopping sometimes, like being able to buy more than 1 package of some items and being able to actually have some supplies in the house x)
